The Spanish Colonial Revival Style estate chosen for the 2012 Pasadena Showcase House of Design was designed by John Winford Byers. The nearly two acre estate in La Canada Flintridge was covered in the Los Angles Times in 1927, prior to its actual construction.
The Andalusian Courtyard will be FormLA’s 9th Showcase and 8th Showcase garden. At the heart of the Old World Spanish home, the melody from an historic tile fountain and shade from a decades old Hollywood Juniper will entice visitors from the home into the outdoor space.
Ensconced by lush foliage, a new outdoor dining room and louge live with the elegance of indoor rooms punctuated by ceilings of California sky. Mediterranean herbs overflow from pots surrounding the dinging area, adding spice to meals served al fresco. The scent of roses from the preserved rose garden drifts through the courtyard, tempting visitors to visit a secluded outdoor lounge. An enticing entertainment space by night, by day the lounge transforms into an optimally day-lit study.
Thoughout the space, new additions complement historic features and connect the home with nature. Brightly glazed pottery draws the eye to historic tile details, while vibrant, climate-compatible foliage draws birds and butterflies to the patio. Likewise, the courtyard’s original permeable concrete pavers serve as a pathway, temping visitors from the outdoor rooms into the native oak woodland beyond.
