Here are our favorite October-blooming native plants
October 2025. LA never stops blooming! Think we are playing tricks on you? See our Blooming Now Boards in Pinterest or our Bloom Stories in Instagram for proof. Native plant garden colors and blooms evolve with the seasons. Here are the scary-beautiful blooms that have us looking back over our shoulders in October.
The Mallows
Sometimes it feels like our native mallows start blooming in autumn. In October, Apricot and coral-colored Globemallow’s season-appropriate colors catch our eye. The buttercup blooms of Indian Mallow add a dose of sunshine as days cool. What if we told you this was just a trick of the mind? These lovelies bloom most of the year.

long bloom cycles, and tolerance for high, dry heat.
California Fushia
California Fuchsia (Zauschneria or Epilobium canum) has a distinctive aesthetic. While its bright red blooms have similarities with Island Snapdragon, its foliage is more delicate and a silvery. It is an excellent way to add LA-style fall color to a garden or to work around the dormancy of other favorites.

Yarrows
We find nothing common about Common Yarrow or her colorful cousins. We love her as a lawn. We love her as a meadow or blooming greenbelt. We love her in bioswales and container gardens. We love her in pesto (We do! Try it!). She may appear delicate, but she is heartier than most – even strong enough to help stabilize slopes.
