Why Settle for Ho-Hum When Your IdealMow Match Could Bring The WOW?
Angelenos lead the nation in the creativity and diversity of our architecture, our fashion, and our technology. So, why do we continue to dump fertilizers and pesticides around our homes in a desperate attempt to look like one another? Like suburban Ohio? We can do better!
Our IdealMow Match Quiz indicates you are a wild thing, and we think you’re likely to fall hard for native grasses that reflect your desire for a distinctive wild and free aesthetic – and offer choice.
Mow or Bloom
Visually arresting California native Yarrows (Achillea millefolium) provide compelling choices. If you choose to mow, it creates a feathery, soft look. Its’ foliage, whether true or silver-green, maintains its color year round. It will also be perfectly happy if you free yourself from mowing.

When left to grow to meadow length, Yarrow produces delightful blooms that appear to dance in the breeze. In addition to the white blooms featured here, Yarrow blooms come in bright yellows and pinks and deep reds. Each variety also has a distinctive foliage color, some a yellow-green similar to a traditional lawn, others a distinctively California silver.

Another bonus? This has long been the the only lawn look-alike eligible for MWD’s latest cash for grass rebates.

Punk + Pretty
If your version of wild comes with a bit of an edge, you may take a shine to California’s silver grasses and groundcovers. We love a stretch of Silver Carpet punk-tuated with silvery blades of Wild Rye or Our Lord’s Candle (Yucca Whipplei). Next to these statements, silver-blue Idaho Fescue ‘Tomalas Bay’ appears green and quite well-behaved.
Playful Paradise
Our hands-down favorite IdealMow match for those with pets, Dune Sedge offers a lot of freedom. While some love it’s ability to look turf-lawn like when mowed, we suspect you’ll need it to walk on its’ wild side with you… and it will!

When left to grow, iDune Sedge forms waves of true-green that have no problem supporting pet-play. Add punctuations of Deer Grass (Muhlenbergia rigens) for variation in height and texture or poppies, Tansy-leafed Phacelia and Blue Eyed Grass for seasonal surprises.
